This is a colorful historical atlas covering the history of the world from 10,000 BC to the 2004 Tsunami. The book is in full color, with numerous photographs of paintings and actual photographs, as well as maps. I think that while each section of the book contains interesting and useful maps, the emphasis of this book is on the history over the maps that are provided, and while maps and pictures dominate there is a lot of interesting text.

The book is divided into an introductory section and 9 sections covering different time periods; 10,000 BCE to 600 CE, 601 CE to 1300, 1301-1400, 1401-1600, 1601-1900, 1901-2000 and 2001 to the present (2004 when the first incarnation of this book was published). Each section is further subdivided into sections with titles such as Alexander the Great and his Empire, Gifted Strategies (wars between Rome and Carthage), Han-The Great Empire of China, Africa - Land and Languages, Muslim World, Shogun and Samurai, and Favorable Wind (trade and the exploration of the new world). As can be seen, these sections cover broad swaths of history during the time period of the section, rather than being focused on isolated events.

While Euro and American centric the book does cover Asia, India, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zeeland - in fact the last section is titled Australia-Becoming a Global Economy, reflecting the fact that the book was originally published in Australia. The book contains two indices, one for maps and another for people and places. It also has a useful 198-page time-line.

I think that given the limitation imposed by trying to cover the history of the world in 512 pages that this book does an excellent job. It is a feast for the eye, while still imparting a lot of useful information. I feel that it does give a good overview of the flow of history, which is all that it was meant to do. If you want a more detailed view you will need a whole library.

Note - This book was also published under the title "All of History".
Considering that only a very small part of the book explaining the history of Asia (China, India, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia), I think the title should be The Historical Atlas of Western World. It is a shame.
A great coffee table book!
Good quality binding. Wonderful illustrations. Well written short pieces on almost all aspects of history. Want to find out a little about the Mayans? The 100 years war in Europe? Alexander the Great? All these topics and hundreds more are covered with two well-written and illustrated pages devoted to each.
It is a large and heavy book. The text is well written and easy to follow even for youngsters. It has a more descentralize point of view tending to treat all geographic regions with similar weight, even considering each importance and relevance to history. Less eurocentered than other 5 atlases I have or read. More pictorial than others although it still comprises of a large amount of maps and graphs. The large size of its pages provides for a pleasant and easy reading of the maps. Review of the 2008 hardcover edition.
